King William IV

My good friend recently recommended that I had to try out the King William IV pub & restaurant in the small rural Cambridgeshire village of Heydon. She told me that they had a fabulous vegetarian menu and the food was to die for so I didn't need any further encouragement!

We just so happened to be in the Cambridge area on Saturday visiting Wood Green Animal Shelter so we decided to stop off at this lovely pub on our way home for a late lunch.

I had no idea that there is also another branch of the Wood Green Animal Shelter's within this very village too which seemed a little spooky as we had just visited the Godqmanchester branch 20 minutes away.

This pub was as stunning on the outside as it was inside. It's beautifully well kept and decorated making it the perfect spot for a lunch date. Inside traditional qualities meet contemporary styling and come together to create a considerably cosy and comfortable setting.

When we opened up the menu I was extremely impressed to see that this place has won the 'Vegetarian Pub of the Year' award! This had us even more excited to dive straight in and get ordering some food.

The menu was pretty extensive with a huge amount of choice for both meat eaters and vegetarians. They even had a couple of vegan friendly options which was great to see!

We opted for a selection of breads and oils to start with which was really delicious and filling.

My husband decided to go for the 'oven roasted Greek moussaka served with Greek salad and garlic bread' with a side of chunky chips. I couldn't believe the size of his plate of food when it arrived! Well worth the £12.95 price tag. He told me that it was full of flavour and he was impressed by the substantial portion sizes!

I opted for the vegan friendly 'chickpea, aubergine and spinach dhansak with basmati rice, mango chutney and poppadum' and also a side of chips which turned out to be completely unnecessary but delicious! I absolutely love home made pub curries so this was a real treat. It was fiery, spicy and delightful. Again my portion size was excellent and I struggled to finish everything on my plate.

My only disappointment was that we didn't have any room left for dessert as I saw a selection being delivered to the table next to us and they looked heavenly!

There is no doubt we will make a return visit to this pub someday. We both left feeling really impressed by everything and it had me thinking it would be a great venue for special occasion meals as it really does cater for everyone with its huge amount of choice.

Also, just to add, they do allow dogs within the bar and garden area so you even have the choice to take your four legged friends along with you too! We took our two dogs with us and we were well looked after. They had no issue in us ordering a couple of sausages for them to keep them quiet and by the looks of their faces they had an equally great time!
