At the weekend I was very lucky to be invited along to a Macramé workshop at my favourite house plant haven, Perrywood Garden Centre. I've always really loved the look of Macramé wall hangings and plant hangers but until now I'd never had a go at the craft so I was really looking forward to the experience and learning how to Macramé for myself.
This was actually the second workshop I've attended at Perrywoods as last year I booked myself onto their popular terrarium class which was so much fun! I'm someone who loves to learn new things and I always really enjoy the experience of attending workshops and mingling with likeminded people. I think it's great that Perrywoods are now starting to offer more creative classes in store. If you're not too far from Essex and are interested in this kind of thing then i'd definitely recommend keeping an eye on their Upcoming Events page which has all the details of their future workshops.
This Macramé workshop was run by Victoria Hellum, aka @plant_joy. Victoria has both a passion for plants and crafting and is an all round lovey person and a great teacher! I was a little nervous at the start of the workshop that I wouldn't get the hang of it and get left behind everyone else but Victoria was so nice in making sure everyone knew what they were doing before moving the class on. She really took her time in explaining everything clearly and made me feel really comfortable.
I really had no idea what to expect with Macramé. From an outside perspective it looked quite similar to crochet which I have to say I did find really difficult to pick up when I first started it a few years ago. I was almost relieved to find out that it works quite simply by knotting different pieces of rope together. I liked that it didn't involve any other apparatus other than your hands and a pair of scissors!
When we first watched Victoria demonstrating how to Macramé I did have a moment of panic where I thought to myself that I was never going to be able to pick it up. However, after tying a few knots I was surprised by how soon I found myself in the flow and able to crack on with minimal assistance.
One thing that immediately resonated with me was how mindful and relaxing I found this craft to be. I sadly no longer crochet anymore but I remember how calming and relaxed it made me feel when I did used to practice and this was exactly the same. I really lost myself in the zone of knotting and I loved it!
I was really impressed by how my Macramé plant hanger was taking shape and how quickly it started to resemble something very beautiful. I think I surprised myself by what my hands were making! Within an hour and a half I had completed my plant hanger which for a beginner I think is pretty good. And I loved the end result!
Once our Macramé plant hangers were complete we got to choose a house plant and pot to pop inside it which completely finished the look. I couldn't wait to get mine home and work out where I was going to hang it. It's been a very welcomed new addition to my ever expanding house plant collection.
It was such a great experience to be taking part in a workshop at Perrywoods again and I could have easily stayed there all day. The workshop took place within their house plant section which is a part of the garden centre i'm already very familiar with. If you've seen my YouTube video you'll already know why I love it so much there! To be surrounded by so many gorgeous plants and learning something new was the perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
