The Secret To Healthy Houseplants | AD

My houseplant collection is my pride and joy and taking care of all 60 of them is something I take great pleasure in. Yes, like most people, I've had some casualties over the years but for the most part my plants have thrived in our home and my collection has just got bigger and bigger.

So what's my secret? Well, it's not really rocket science. I am blessed to have a very light and bright home which seems to serve my plants very well. I never over water my plants, in fact I probably neglect them a bit but that's a good thing as they like to dry out in-between watering.

One thing I have thought about over the past few months is how a humidifier could benefit my houseplants. All the big plant influencers I follow seem to have one and so I've been really curious about the pro's of having one in my home. Elechomes recently reached out and offered me the opportunity to trial out one of their humidifiers and experience the many benefits that they can bring to your life, health and home for myself.

To be honest, before now, I wasn't really fully aware of the multiple benefits a humidifier can have on your life from improving air quality, alleviating dry skin, improving sleep and keeping you healthy. Another major plus point of course is that they can also promote the growth of indoor plants. A few of my plants have definitely struggled a bit throughout winter so I was looking forward to seeing how a humidifier could potentially help revive them.

I was sent the 6L Humidifier UC5501 to test out. This sleek piece of kit holds up to 6 litres of water providing a whopping 40 hours of humidity. It also has a quiet sleep mode, auto humidity control and three different mist levels. It even has an aroma box which allows you to add essential oils too which is something I was particularly excited to try out! Aside from all of that, it has been designed to make your life easier with a timer, safety shut off and a handy remote which means you don't even have to get off the sofa or out of your bed to control it.

When using the humidifier you have a choice of cool or warm mist and there's also a smart humidity sensor which will detect the level of humidity in the room for you. I like the fact that you can set what humidity you'd like your room to be and then watch the levels increase when the humidifier is turned on.

We live pretty close to an airport and, even though we're in the countryside, I often wonder how clean the air we breathe in actually is. I am also a sufferer of hayfever and until now I didn't know that a humidifier can also help with allergies too. I've definitely noticed a difference and improvement in my hay fever since having the humidifier on in my home. Before it arrived I was sneezing regularly and waking up with itchy eyes but now I feel so much more comfortable.

As a write this post we are currently in the middle of a lockdown due to the Coronavirus here in the UK. Did you know that humidifiers can also help to prevent the spread of airborne viruses? Moisture has the ability to prevent the movement of germs as it makes them too heavy to float around in the air. This helps in reducing the spread of many illnesses including influenza. Dry air also often causes people to cough so moistening the air should help if you often experience a lot of coughing in your daily life.

Thankfully the days here are now getting warmer as we enter into Spring, but during the Winter months a humidifier can actually make your home feel warmer and even reduce your heating bills. I'm already looking forward to using this product throughout the colder months, particularly in my home office where I tend to spend most of my time and where a lot of my houseplants live.

I went into this trial run purely thinking about the benefits of the product to my houseplants but I have come to the end of it with a much greater knowledge around all of the multiple benefits humidifiers can add to your life. It's turned out to be the product I never really knew I needed so much!

Overall I found this humidifier really simple to use and it fit nicely into my home aesthetic without being too noticeable or taking up too much room. I love the contemporary design of the product and found that the white version complimented the other furniture in my home well. I think a major pro and selling point to this humidifier is how much water it can hold which saves you having to refill it frequently like a lot of other smaller versions I have seen. If you have a lot of houseplants like me I would definitely recommend considering a humidifier of this size.

And for my houseplants? Well they're certainly looking perkier, greener and happier since the humidifier arrived. I had a couple of plants which looked quite dry and whose leaves had started to brown and curl up . The impact the humidifier had on them was a real pleasant surprise!
